Sonoma County Will Host The 2013 Emerald Cup This December

Sonoma County Will Host The 2013 Emerald Cup

Founded in 2003, The Emerald Cup is the longest running organic outdoor growing competition in the world. This year, the event will be held December 14 and 15 at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in California.

“The winner will receive a 2-week, all expense paid trip to a cannabis friendly resort in Jamaica.”

Since its inception, The Emerald Cup has seen a notable rise in popularity. Tim Blake, the cup’s producer, said the first event, which was held near Humboldt and Mendocino, only had 23 entries. Last year’s event attracted over 200 entries.

Even still, those involved with The Emerald Cup hope to continue it’s expansion and have moved it to a bigger, more accessible location. Furthermore, the winner of The 2013 Emerald Cup flower competition will receive a 2-week, all expenses paid trip to a cannabis friendly resort in Jamaica, courtesy of Skunk Magazine.

What Is The Emerald Cup?

As mentioned, The Emerald Cup is the oldest competition in the world dedicated to 100% organic growing. It traditionally served as a means for a tight-knit group of Northern California growers to exhibit the quality of their final harvest and celebrate the work they put in over the course of the outdoor growing season.

“The medicine is judged on color, smell, trichomes, crystals, taste, vibrancy, and finally how it changes the consciousness.” – Tim Blake

Nonetheless, The Emerald Cup has expanded its reach in recent years and is now accepting entries from throughout the Golden State. Further, the competition has widened its range; it now has a concentrate category, in addition to the traditional flower event.

According to Blake, “the medicine is judged on color, smell, trichomes, crystals, taste, vibrancy, and finally how it changes the consciousness.”

In addition to the competitions, there will be musical performances from Rebelution, J Boog, Big Brother & the Holding Co, Jefferson Starship, and more.

Further, there will be educational panels and workshops from a number of cannabis industry leaders. The long list of expected panelists include: Steve and Andrew DeAngelo, DJ Short, Fred Gardner, Martin Lee, Subcool, Mz. Jill, and Selecta Nikka T.
