1st Annual High Times U.S. Cannabis Cup To Be Held In Denver, Colorado
The 1st annual High Times US Cannabis Cup is set to take place on the stoner holiday, 4/20, in Denver, Colorado this year. Although Denver has hosted a “medical” cup for the last three years, this year’s event won’t be as ‘medical’ because of Amendment 64, which legalized recreational use of marijuana. While last years cup discussions were focused around the upcoming vote to legalize cannabis in the state, this year’s cup will feature a BYO (bring-your-own) bud, Amendment 64-friendly zone where anyone (21 and older) is free to light up. An editor from High Times commented on the subject, “As far as I’m concerned, the High Times Medical Cannabis Cup has never been about medicine…we certainly stress the importance of basic rights to use pot freely and for whatever reason in our seminars and during our stage presentations.”
“This whole situation is unprecedented, [but] I don’t foresee a problem. People have been smoking pot at concerts forever. I’m sure plenty of people have smoked weed at Red Rocks before.”– Bobby Black, High Times Magazine
The cup will also feature an, “Amendment 20 Compliant Zone” where people are free to roam about hundreds of booths testing out new innovative products, and test out cannabis from all of the state’s top dispensaries. While cups in the past have attracted as many as 5,000 attendees, this year’s cup is expected to be much larger because of the new laws. It will be one of the state’s first tests of marijuana tourism, so it will be interesting to see how the event will be regulated.
Bobby Black, a senior editor at High Times, said public consumption of cannabis will not be tolerated at the cup. However, considering the two-day event will be held at a private club with a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater, I think it’s safe to say that people will be lighting up. Black goes on to say, “This whole situation is unprecedented, [but] I don’t foresee a problem. People have been smoking pot at concerts forever. I’m sure plenty of people have smoked weed at Red Rocks before.” Indeed, sir. Indeed. After all, the Saturday night show featuring Cypress Hill & Slightly Stoopid IS called “Hotbox at the Red Rocks”.
