Today I’ll be reviewing the newly released vaporizer pen kit from The Kind Pen, a relatively new vape manufacturer based in New Jersey that launched operations back in January 2013. Since the company’s inception, The Kind Pen’s team has worked quickly to expand their product line-up by releasing new versions of their vapes that include more and more modern features each generation.
The Dream pen vaporizer kit is the latest variation from The Kind Pen and although it may look like a lot of other vape pens on the market, it does have some very unique features that make it stand out from the crowd.
Built exclusively for concentrates (wax, shatter, crumble, etc.), the Dream pen comes with a dual quartz crystal atomizer (coiled) and a ceramic disk atomizer — neither of which play well with dry herbs or e-liquids. Style-wise, the pen is currently available in two different finishes: gun metal black (as shown in photos) or silver.
“Featuring a buttonless, touch-activated temp control at the base of the pen, the Dream vaporizer has three heat settings and can be easily turned ON/OFF by tapping the unit’s base 5 times fast.”
Housed inside the Dream pen vaporizer is a 1500mAh battery built for longer usage times and more powerful draws than its predecessor. Included in the kit is a USB charger which makes charging the Dream from The Kind Pen a breeze. Simply plug it into your computer while you check emails. After plugging the charger into the battery a red light will turn on; this will continue to stay red as it charges but it will eventually turn green letting you know your battery is fully charged for another vape session. To turn the Dream pen ON/OFF, simply tap the unit’s base 5 times fast until you see the lights blink.
Featuring a buttonless, touch-activated temp control at the base of the pen, the Dream vaporizer has three heat settings. To navigate through the temperature settings once the pen is activated, simply tap the base 3 more times quickly until you see the color change from red (350°), yellow (390°), and green (430°). Once you have your desired temperature set, all you have to do is hold the base of the pen to take a draw. You’ll notice the pen lights up the same color as the selected heat setting as you hold it in to take a hit. Simple, right?
It definitely took some getting used to but I found the Dream pen works its best vaping shatter when it is on the yellow heat setting. For whatever reason, this temperature setting seems to give me fuller/thicker draws than the lowest heat setting (red) without completely burning through the concentrate too quickly on the hottest setting (green).
“The Dream’s atomizer is constructed of ceramic and the mouthpiece is made of glass — two high-quality materials that are ideal to use for the pen’s vapor path.”
If you are like me, you may be confused where all of your concentrate went after just one or two 5-10 second draws. At first, I didn’t experience the expansive feeling in my lungs and throat that I am used to from taking similarly sized dabs out of a glass rig/enail, but any negative feelings were short-lived as the pen got warmed up and began producing quality draws as I used it more.
The air pulled through the unit when you inhale is surprisingly smooth and flavorful. You can really taste the terpenes from your concentrate each and every draw. I’m guessing this is because the Dream’s atomizer is constructed of ceramic and the mouthpiece is made of glass — two high-quality materials that are ideal to use for the pen’s vapor path. Just remember to keep the unit upright when taking draws or you may find some concentrate dripping down the side of the glass mouthpiece as it is heated.
The Dream pen has 4 built-in air settings that can easily be adjusted by twisting the grooved portion at the top of the unit. I regrettably didn’t know this was a feature until I accidentally twisted it out of curiosity one night, but I guess that’s the downside of not taking the time to read the directions that came with the vape. I tend to like more airflow when I take draws; I found this allows the air to be a bit cooler on the inhale.
One thing that can be a bummer with some vape pens is that they get too hot to touch or even store in your pocket. What I like about the Dream pen is that the battery and glass mouthpiece do a good job staying relatively cool to the touch, even after long draws on the highest heat setting. It is so easy to pre-pack the chamber with a dab or two of concentrate and take it with you on the go no matter what situation you find yourself in.
Cleaning the Dream pen is a must. When using the Dream pen for an extended amount of time, the glass mouthpiece will naturally become clogged and dirty resulting in a more difficult draw. It is recommended that you clean it with an alcohol swab often, just like you would any other glass piece. When cleaning the heating chamber, you want to gently brush to clean the walls. DO NOT push down all the way on to the heating element or you may damage the atomizers as both provided are very fragile.
Do not fill the heating chamber with any seeds, stems, and/or liquids. Do not touch the actual heating chamber within 2 minutes after use– it will be hot. Do not overpack the heating chamber with concentrate; you want to allow airflow for even heating. Do not leave your unit standing up unattended or the glass mouthpiece may break if it is tipped. Oh, did I mention you should not put in any water or other liquid? Don’t do it…
Overall, my experience with the Dream pen has been positive and I will likely continue to use it as my daily vape pen for concentrates — at least until something goes wrong with it or another better vape pen comes into my possession. Although there is a slight learning curve, with just a little bit of practice, the pen becomes very easy to use. According to the Kind Pen’s website, the Dream only costs $99.99 and comes with a lifetime warranty. Health-conscious consumers can feel good knowing this pen utilizes a non-toxic air pathway that provides pure, flavorful draws.
