About this Organization

Founded by Martin A. Lee and Fred Gardner in 2010, Project CBD is a non-profit organization based in Northern California. It exists to defend and promote whole-plant cannabis treatments.

Project CBD promotes and publicizes research about the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) and the rest of the phytocannabinoids. In turn, they update doctors and patients of developments in cannabinoid science.

Furthermore, the Project CBD website maintains a list of dispensaries and caregivers that maintain a selection of CBD-rich cannabis strains.


Martin A. Lee
Co-Founder & Director
Martin A Lee is an activist, journalist, and author who has published a number of works, including Smoke Signals: A Social History of Marijuana – Medical, Recreational, and Scientific. He is Co-Founder & Director of Project CBD, a non-profit organization he started with Fred Gardner in 2010. Lee co-authored his first book, Acid Dreams: The CIA, LSD and the Sixties Rebellion, in 1985. It explored the use of LSD during the 1960’s, including mind control experiments conducted by the CIA. Fred Gardner
Fred Gardner is the Founder and Publisher of O’Shaughnessy’s, the journal of cannabis in clinical practice. His work with the publication led to Gardner co-founding Project CBD alongside fellow writer Martin A. Lee in 2010. Gardner recieved his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1963. Four years later, he went on to start a coffeehouse in Columbia, South Carolina that became a hangout for GIs. In turn, Gardner covered the court martial off 27 GIs charged with mutiny at the Presidio of San Francisco in 1968. He published The Unlawful Concert, a book about the case, in 1970.

In turn, they broke away and started the MPP. In the time since its inception, the Marijuana Policy Project has garnered support from a number of influential parties and their advisory board includes celebrities like Jack Black, Bill Maher, Adrienne Curry, and Jesse Ventura. They have been instrumental to a number of changes in cannabis policy at the state level and aims to have the same effect on a national scale.
